Description

Winemaking Notes

Rich, lush and structured, the 2015 vintage displays intense aromas and flavors of dark berries, black currant and crushed violet. It is velvety with a smooth, lingering finish of toasty baking spices, cocoa, and earthy notes.

History

Our 2015 Reserve Malbec was made in our small lot Artisan Cellar. Winemakers Greg Morthole and Justin Seidenfeld employ techniques such as gentle destemming, whole berry fermentation, barrel fermentatations and thermo maceration, using small tanks and equipment sized for the most discriminating vineyard selection process. Our cellar is state of the art and represents the Klein family's commitment to producing the finest wines possible.

The Vineyards

Storms in late winter gave the vines plenty of water that they would need in the early spring. Warm days from late winter into spring induced the vines into bud break a little earlier than normal. The weather alternated between cool and warm periods throughout the summer, with a few heat spells here and there. Verasion came in July, and sugars slowly accumulated in the berries with the warm sunny days leading up to harvest. Harvest commenced as the fruit from each block tasted optimally ripe and delicious. The Rockaway Malbec, block 6D, up on the shoulder of the hill at at 500' elevation, was picked on Sept 15. The Farrow vineyard, tucked in a little valley just east of Geyserville, CA, at an elevation of 415', was picked on Sept 16. And our Cooley Red Mountain Malbec, up at 1800' elevation was picked on Sept 24. This vintage, we chose to blend 53% Farrow, 33% Rockaway, and 14% Cooley Malbec together, each vineyard adding it's own nuance to the wine.
