2015 Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Winemaking Notes
The 2015 vintage was warm overall, but cooler than the previous few years. Budbreak was very early, weeks ahead of average, and yields were very low. Weather alternated between cool and hot for the remainder of the summer and, with all things in balance and satisfied with flavors, we harvested from September 18-26.
The 2015 vintage of 2040 is lush and elegant consisting of high-elevation, mountain fruit with aromas of violet, blueberry and black cherry. The palate is rich with sweet oak and a hint of spice with a velvety smooth, lingering finish and well-integrated tannins. Pairs with a grilled filet mignon, braised beef short ribs and sharp cheeses. Enjoy this wine now or cellar for enjoyment for years to come.
History
2040 is inspired by our winemaker's passion to create wines from high elevation vineyards, wines that are reflective of the apex of the land with our sights set on the highest peaks of the Cooley Ranch vineyards.
The new wine comprises Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the highest block of the wild and expansive Cooley Ranch in the far western reaches of Sonoma County. The block named sky High sits 2,040 feet above sea level, towering above all neighboring peaks.
Grapes up there look down on everything: Hawks surfing thermals in mid-air, mountains beyond mountains to the north, and the gentle waters of Lake Sonoma. The steep slopes of the vineyard force vines to dig deep into the soil for nutrients and water, ultimately resulting in thick-skinned grapes with bold yet complicated flavors. Winemaker Justin Seidenfeld has always longed to create a wine from one of these high-elevation vineyards. With 2040, he has fulfilled that dream.
2040 is quite literally a crowning achievement from ROWEN Wine Company.
The Vineyards
Bordeaux varietals thrive on steep terrain and volcanic soil and, our Cooley Ranch is precisely the kind of landscape they love, with elevations ranging from 800 to 2,040 feet and influenced by cool Pacific breezes. Cooley Ranch is blessed with a bright red, volcanic-based soil that is sought after for its high-quality grape-growing potential and one of the reasons our winemakers carefully selected this land to plant on. Also, due to being above the fog line, Cooley warms up during harvest to allow for hotter growing temperatures and extra tannin development. All of this provides beautifully ripened fruit and balanced acidity ultimately reflecting the best of our superior lots of Bordeaux varietals
