Winemaking Notes

The 2021 vintage turned out to be a fantastic growing season, with no frost and very mild temperatures throughout most of the year. However, the unpredictable spring rains ended in March in what would become one of the driest seasons on record in Sonoma County. Despite a predicted early harvest due to dry conditions, we were pleased to find flavors and high acidities indicating everything was in balance and on track for an August harvest.

Winemaking is light handed, with timely and deliberate choices made to craft a wine that genuinely reflects the vineyard and vintage. This rose has bright aromas and flavors, fresh acidity and a clean finish which is due to selecting exceptional blocks of fruit and picking early in the season when the acidity is naturally high and the sugars are low. The clone 113 block of Pinot Noir provided 92% of the finished blend, which was given 2 hours of skin contact to deepen the fruit and color before being pressed. The other 8% came from the clone 115 block, which also received 2 hours of skin contact. The resulting blend was chosen for its berry fruit, herbal and citrus notes and balanced finish.

History

Davis Bynum is distinguished as the first winery to produce a single vineyard Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. The vintage was 1973 and the grapes were from Joe Rochiolis now prized vineyard. Today, our heritage of winemaking lives on through hand-crafted single vineyard wines grown exclusively in the Russian River Valley.

The Vineyards

Jane's Vineyard, located in the Santa Rosa Plains neighborhood of the Russian River Valley is made up of the adjacent Lindley's, Crinella and Garfield blocks - 132 acres of Pinot Noir with nine different clones. This small area tends to enjoy the very best of the iconic local climate; never too hot during the day, and consistently chilly at night. Jane's Vineyard shows superior vine balance thanks to its well-drained, shallow and low vigor soils. For these reasons, it was an easy decision to create our inaugural vintage of Davis Bynum Rose of Pinot Noir - a beautiful expression of the vineyard, region and varietal upon which our heritage was built.
