Cabernet Sauvignon
2013 Rockaway 1.5L
6 In Stock
Winemaking Notes
The 2013 Rockaway has wonderful concentrated flavors of black cherry, red currant and plum with a hint of sage and leather. The earthy minerality of the wine is balanced out by notes of baking spices with a rich, complex structure and a long lingering finish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar it for enjoyment for years to come.
Vineyard Notes
Established in 1994, Rockaway is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but includes all fi ve of the classic Bordeaux varieties. Rising up to an elevation of 750 feet, the land generally slopes northeast and southwest, with soils comprised of gravelly clay subsoil over fractured sandstone. This well-drained, low pH earth tends to encourage the production of small-berried clusters, ideal for making a bold, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with juicy red and black fruit character, and an elegantly round and seductive
mid-palate.
Production Notes
2013 was the kind of growing season that most would wish we could have every year; a dry, frost-free spring, a warm summer with minimal heat spikes, and a warm rain free autumn that allowed for picking the fruit perfectly mature. Warm days with cool evenings
prevailed in September which kept sugar accumulation at an even pace and left acidity in the grapes. Rockaway is always a complicated harvest, with separate blocks and the varietals coming to full ripeness at slightly different times. We harvested the Rockaway Cabernet Sauvignon from a dozen different blocks between September 24 and October 8. A few blocks were fermented together, but most were kept separate until blending the following spring. The Merlot was picked on September 23, the Malbec on September 24, and finally the Petit Verdot from the very top of the hill on October 7 and 8.
