Winemaking Notes
We chose to blend the darker-fruited and spicy Dijon clones 667 and 777 from Dutton Ranch – Gregori, with a small amount of the red fruit and rose petal characteristics Dijon clone 115 from Dutton Ranch – Lorenzo. Fermenting this wine in a combination of oak barrels and stainless steel tanks contributes to generous fruit aromatics and complexity.
Fresh fruit aromas, silky tannins, fine acidity, and subtle spice nuances are traditional hallmarks of this wine. The 2022 vintage of Dutton Ranches shows ripe strawberry, raspberry compote, and vinous aromas with lilac, oak spice and cola, sweetness on the midpalate, silky smooth, with strawberry and toasted
marshmallow flavors, and milk chocolate undertones. The palate is medium rich, soft-edged, but with a measure of acidity, and fine tannins for aging.
Vineyard Notes
Davis Bynum Pinot Noirs showcase the unique terroir of distinct sites in the Russian River Valley. The 2021 Dutton Ranches Pinot Noir comes from the Dutton Lorenzo vineyard in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA, a cool climate area just south of Forestville, CA. The vines grow in the fabled Goldridge sandy loam, common to this area of the Russian River Valley.
Production Notes
The 2022 vintage was very mild. Rain from the previous autumn was light, and the new year entered warm and dry with daytime highs up to 70°F in early spring. An unusual sprinkle of rain in early summer was no cause for concern, and the temperature turned predictably hot for a few days in June as usual, but the season was mild overall, with most summer days peaking around 85-90°F. An early start to harvest came as no surprise with the seasonable weather as we picked the three different blocks from mid to late August when they became ripe.
