Winemaking Notes
Red plum, raspberry jam, toffee, and dusty baking spice show a great balance between fruit and savory notes. The mouthfeel is rich, with good acidity, while the flavors show darker fruit like plum compote, forest floor and a lingering spiciness. The fruit and savory notes in this wine along with the acidity and slight tannins make this a very versatile pairing for many different dishes. While it can be enjoyed with anything, we recommend braised pork in sweet soy sauce, beef bourguignon with bacon and mushrooms or creamy red lentils with butter roasted broccolini and carrots.
Vineyard Notes
Like Davis Bynum himself, the Bacigalupi family has a deep history in the Russian River Valley, growing grapes along Westside Road since 1964 in an area known as the Middle Reach. Today, with 65 years of experience in viticulture and winemaking, the Bacigalupis remain one of the most sought-after sources for premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in all of Sonoma County. The family’s Frost Ranch stretches from Westside Road down to the Russian River. Our block is on the lower terrace, closer to the river, with sandy loam and clay loam soils. Due to the soil diversity and warmer temperatures, grapes from this vineyard produce a richer, riper and spicier style of Pinot Noir, showcasing the characteristic complexity of the Middle Reach.
Production Notes
Extra rain into the spring of 2023 saturated the ground, delaying bud break and therefore harvest, later that fall. After the last rain fell in early May, sunny dry weather became the norm. Pleasant summer days rarely hit 95°F through late August and so véraison was predictably late, by about a month. After a rare tropical storm hit California at the end of August, harvest started much later than normal, but the wait was worth it, with the Bacigalupi vineyard picking in the early morning of October 5.
