Winemaking Notes
Selected for its complexity and ripe red fruit notes, clone 115 lends notes of ripe strawberry, rhubarb pie, and dusty baking spice aromas give way to a pleasantly rich mouthfeel, with a soft, sweet midpalate and lots of underlying acidity. Savory flavors show as chalky minerality with subtle mushroom and forest floor, but the cherry and ripe strawberry are present throughout, and the acidity lingers on the finish. This wine has complexity, acidity and tannins to make food pairings interesting, and was made vegan, so you can enjoy with whatever your palate desires. Try this wine with slow cooked beef ragu pappardelle, three bean vegetarian chili, a classic pairing of smoked salmon or, for a twist, try with a Cobb salad with mango and quinoa.
Vineyard Notes
In 1973, Davis Bynum made history when he crafted the very first single-vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, using exceptional fruit from Rochioli Vineyard. Inspired by his groundbreaking release, we proudly honor his vision with this 50th anniversary Pinot Noir sourced from the same legendary site. Today, Rochioli Vineyard remains one of the most esteemed sites in California, selling a portion of its grapes to world-renowned producers. Located in the Middle Reach neighborhood of the Russian River Valley, the northeast orientation of the rows in this block allows for an equal amount of sun on both sides of the vine, resulting in beautifully developed fruit year after year. The combination of diligent pruning and the sandy soil drainage maintains balance in the growing vines and ripening grapes, resulting in a balanced and delicate wine.
Production Notes
Extra rain into the spring of 2023 saturated the ground, delaying bud break and therefore harvest, later that fall. After the last rain fell in early May, sunny dry weather became the norm. Pleasant summer days rarely hit 95°F through late August and so véraison was predictably late, by about a month. After a rare tropical storm hit California at the end of August, harvest started much later than normal - but the wait was worth it, with the Rochioli vineyard picking in the early morning of September 21.
